Religion plays an important role in life to only a minority of the population. Traditional religion of the Estonians is the Christian faith in the form of Lutheranism, as it is widespread in Scandinavia. Nevertheless, the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELK) is a quasi-official Church (for example, is usually the holding of religious services at Parliament opening) and its central figure, the Archbishop of the Estonian public religion. The EELK dominates the relatively comprehensive theologian trained in Estonia (in Tartu University and Tallinn at the Church College). Today, commit about 30% of the population as members of Christian churches or denominations. Of these:

* 13.6% Evangelical Lutheran
* 12.8% Orthodox
* 0.5% Baptists
* 0.5% Roman Catholic

The ten major Christian churches and communities have come together in the Council of Christian Churches in Estonia.

A special feature are the approximately 5,000 Old Believers, which since the 18th Centuries of persecution in the Russian heartland in the peripheral regions of the Russian Empire fled. On the Estonian shore of Lake Peipsi, there are numerous villages inhabited by Old Believers. Smaller communities also exist in Tallinn and Tartu.

In addition, 4210 of the public member of the Christian Community of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

There are also smaller communities of other Protestant, Jewish and Islamic communities. At the last census in 2000, Estonia officially gave 138 people (approximately 0.01% of the population) Hinduism as their religion: 90 Hindus (including 54 Estonians) and 48 followers of the Hare Krishna (movement including 22 Estonians). As an organization occurs in Estonia since 1991, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness of Estonia (Estonian Eesti Krishna Teadvuse kogudus) in appearance.

When Estonian established himself as a literary language during the 1800s occurred as part of the romantic cultural movement. The intellectual life in the northern Baltic region received a boost when the University of Tartu was opened again 1802nd This academy had founded in 1632 when Estonia was under Swedish rule. University of Tartu was dominated in the early 1800s by German scholars and German languages. An Estonian front shock was when Esther’s Scholars Association (Õpetatut Eesti Selts) was founded 1838th The association was keen to disseminate knowledge about Estonian history and literature, but in fact stood in the street. Extremely little was written down. It was forced out of the box to write down. Primary dreamed it to discover a mighty national epic. 1839 suggested the group leader Friedrich Robert Faehlmann (1798-1850) that it would be built around the Estonian Kalevipoeg-legends.

In Kalevipoeg protagonist performs miraculous feats. He is at once a king, a hardworking farmer and soldier who defends his country against invading people who are forced to pay a fine in life because of his erövringslystnad. The total lack romantic love is a defining feature of Kalevipoeg. The positive relationship between the story of people characterized instead of stoic esteem and consideration. The man who came to row ashore task to compile and publish Kalevipoeg became Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald (1803-1882). The publication was done with some impediment. The future Estonian national epic might not pass the tsarist censorship at the first attempt 1853rd The text was considered politically sensitive. 1857, however, could Kalevipoeg appear on the scientific publication with the censors hoped limited readership. Kreutzwald goal was to give all the tests available to its literary heritage, but he lacked capital for a larger version. The matter was a happy solution since 1859 Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg Kreutzwald rewarded with a larger sum of money. Three years later, a popular edition of

Censorship was milder in Finland than in other Gulf of Finland. However, it would take ten years before the epic was the people who read Kreutzwald and the Estonian scholars in Tartu had hoped for.

The flag of Estonia consists of three equal horizontal bands, with a blue top, including one black, one white and bottom band. When the flag is hung vertically, the blue track links.

Estonian Flag Meaning

The original interpretation of the colors was the following:

* Blue represents the sky, the lakes and the sea of Estonia, and symbolizes the nationalist ideas of the country;
* Black is the color of the soil of the homeland;
* White represents the aspirations of the people to happiness and light.

The flag is a tricolor with three jobs and an equally high aspect ratio of 7:11. The minimum size is 105×165 cm. Only the design of the service and maritime war flag is different: it shows the arms of Estonia and has a swallow tail.

The blue in the flag is Pantone 285C in the coding, it is CMYK 91-43-0-0.
Flag of Estonia Scandinavian Cross

In 2001, the politician Kaarel Tarand for the change of a tricolor flag in a Nordic Cross flag design, the same colors as the current flag. Supporters of this design thought to claim that the current flag, respect the Estonia gave an a post-Soviet state with a flag used many times in Eastern Europe, while a Scandinavian Cross link to the Nordic countries could give back.
Estonians consider themselves more to the Scandinavian than to belong to the Baltic, their culture and history would fit well with countries such as Sweden, Denmark and part of Finland. From a Baltic culture would also be no question, other Baltic States have a major impact gekent of the medieval German knight Orders, so up to Konigsberg and Memelland to it. In December 1999 this was the Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs (and current president since 2006) Toomas Hendrik Ilves in a speech made from the cloth called “Estonia as a Nordic Country” Swedish Institute of International Relations.

Others also see a change in the official country name in the international traffic is down. The working name of Estonia would be adjusted in Estonia, the name which other countries with a Germanic language, Estonia know. Several Nordic Cross-models were created since 1919, when the official state flag was designed and selected. In 1919, this alternative was to lose out to the current flag.
[edit] History
Estonian flag on the parliament building
The blue-black-white flag

The flag was first developed as the flag of the Estonian University Student Association at the University of Tartu. The flag was then associated with Estonian nationalism and was used as the national flag when the country became independent on February 24, 1918, officially from November 21, 1918.

The invasion by the Soviet Union in June 1940 led to the banning of the flag. The flag was removed from the tower of Pikk Hermann on June 21, 1940, Estonia was still independent. On June 22, the flag with the Flag of the Soviet Union used to it on June 27 was removed.

During the German occupation of 1941-1944 the flag was accepted as the ethnic flag of Estonia, but not the national flag. After the independence of Estonia in September 1944 the Estonian flag was hoisted back. On September 22 the red flag was hoisted again, and not much later removed the Estonian flag again.

The flag was banned until the perestroika in the late 1980s. On February 24, 1989 the flag was hoisted back on the Pikk Hermann tower in Tallinn. The flag was adopted as national flag back on August 7, 1990, not long back independence for Estonia.

Estonia Economy

Estonian economy is growing fast, partly due to a number of Scandinavian companies relocating their routine operations and Russian oil transit using Estonian ports. Estonia has a strong information technology sector. A high percentage of households have a fast internet connection.

The reform process in Estonia since independence brought a dire economic situation. The legacy of the Soviet dictatorship with a centrally planned industrialization policy has saddled the country with unbalanced industrial structures and under-performing companies. Add to that fuel shortages and a shortage of raw materials for industry, and it is clear that Estonia had considerable difficulty in the first years after independence.

Yet the transformation from a planned economy (the Soviet Union) to a market economy quickly. It began with the establishment of a central bank and allowing commercial banks. Three years after independence, 50% of the gross domestic product (GDP) achieved by the private sector. After initial losses in GDP in 1994 grew for the first time in years, with 3.5 to 5%. In 1995 Estonia signed an association treaty with the European Union accession to the EU in prospect.
A major problem for Estonia is the pollution. During the Soviet domination of the Soviet army has hundreds of thousands of tons of oil dumped on Estonian territory. Many toxic materials in the soil and (ground) water came.

Estonian Trade

Estonia has quickly become an exporting country par excellence. Estonia exports mainly to Finland, Sweden, Russia, Latvia and Germany. In 1999, for about $ 2.5 billion exported. Performed were food, textiles, wood and charcoal. Imported products were machinery, foodstuffs, mineral products and textiles, mainly from Finland, Russia, Sweden and Germany. In 1999, for about $ 3.4 billion imported. Trade with the Russians fell dramatically after independence, from 70% to 15%. Only in recent years is the weather better in that regard.

Estonian Industry

Estonia is well educated, technically skilled workers to Western European standards are poorly paid. This makes it very attractive for foreign companies to invest in the Estonian economy. Companies mainly from Finland, Sweden and the United States invest heavily in the timber industry, textile and manufacturing industries. Americans and Finns to invest particularly in the computer industry, electronics and automotive industries. Estonia is 40% covered with forest (1.8 million ha). The operating results in timber for furniture, for paper making and is an important fuel. The timber industry contributed 12% to the GDP and is one of the industries with the best prospects. Substantial foreign investment by the flourishing engineering industry and electronics industry. In 1995 these were the most exported products (electric motors, cables and high-tech products). The textile industry exports mainly to the United States and European countries.
Estonia has large stocks including phosphorus used in fertilizer production. The chemical industry also produces including plastics, paint and varnish.

Winters in Estonia are characterized by short and cold days. The mercury in this period could fall below – 20 degrees. Depending on the temperature is even possible to have the ice to the nearby islands to walk or skate. This is still very unique. Among Estonians, ice fishing is also popular. Through a large and small drill rod little one tries to catch fish.

The winter is associated with snow. On average there is snow 100 days a year, so the essence of the beautiful landscapes more emerges. We recommend for winter activities to travel to the winter capital of Estonia, Oepää. In this small area can find mountains, perfect for skiing and snowboarding can.

The most popular activity in the winter cross-country skiing. Because snow is the long flat area to land an excellent cross-country skiing. You can follow routes in different areas by the beautiful winter nature. In Tallinn (nommé) is a 4 kilometer long route laid out where you can cross-country skiing. This route is ideal to combine with a visit to Tallinn.
Because Estonia is rich in nature, walking is a good activity for good to relax. The landscape radiates a tremendous tranquility. There are several wild animals living in the forests as wolves, bears, elk and boar. The chance that you encounter these animals is very small.

Estonian climate is under the influence of the warm Gulf Stream. Thats because the Estonian climate is a little bit warmer than the average in neighboring countries. It may freeze up to -25 ° C in the coastal areas, but it can get even colder in the inlands.

That usually lasts no longer than a few days. In the summer it can warm to 30 ° C,

but temperatures around 20 ° C are quite common.

Months from November to January are dark with only six hours sunlight. Rain can fall in any season in the form of brief heavy showers. On average there is 500-600 mm rainfall in the lower parts of the country and 700-900 mm in some higher areas. Approximately 75% of the precipitation falls as rain, snow and the rest. Spring and autumn are generally cold and wet. In the winter it is sometimes possible to the ice to nearby islands to walk or skate.

Estonia is a forest country. Half of the land territory of Estonia is covered with forests.
About the half of Estonian forests belong to the governmental profit-making institution called RMK(State forest management centre), which means that on the one hand, RMK has to earn income for the state by logging and selling wood material.

On the other hand, RMK has tasks that do not bring direct economic income, but that are useful for all of us: maintaining the unique forest nature, nature friendly forest works, creation of free recreation possibilities.

The predominant majority of Estonian forests are softwood forests, but there are also hardwood forests. At the present are able to naturally (without human intervention), however, constitute only a spruce forests and pine and birch is temporary.

Estonian products and dishes typical of the lists of professionals and interested parties are taken into account the advice and suggestions. Thus, it is certainly not a definitive list of Estonian cuisine.

The majority of the Estonian food is simple, and for a long time, grain and bread were in the first place, and potatoes are added later. Milk, salted fish, and pork are also part of the daily menu.

Estonian Traditional dishes are remarkable for the simplicity of their preparation. The same food can differ slightly from place to place. The food was a pleasant unique flavor by threshing barn furnace, and all herbs can not duplicate the effect. The way of placing the food on the table was very simple: soup in a wooden bowl, a large piece of meat on a platter, accompanied by rye bread. At other times, however, in a tub of butter, warm bread with barley cold fresh milk, and stewed pork with sauerkraut mulgi.

Main dishes in Estonia

- Pork roast (with sauerkraut and oven-baked potatoes or with cheese or with mushrooms)

- Pork rib with oven-baked potatoes
- “Mulgipuder” – southern regional potato porridge (groats and potatoes with fried cubes of lardy meat)
- A folksy sauerkraut stew (stewed sauerkraut with groats and lardy pork) with potatoes
- Brawn with mustard or vinegar or horse-radish and potatoes
-  Pork stew with vegetables
- Wild beast roast (moose, bear, wild boar, goat, hare, bird)
- Black pudding with lingonberry jam and/or pumpkin salad and oven potatoes
- Baltic herring casserole (salted Baltic herrings cooked with egg, milk and potatoes)
-  Potato and mincemeat casserole
-  Vegetable stew
-  Boiled pork with vegetables
-  Mashed potatoes
- Different potato-vegetable porridges with groats (potato-pea porridge, peeled barley-turnip porridge etc)

The main food for the Estonians used bread and various other flour products. Whereas, bread was considered sacred, and one was not supposed to throw or step on. Other food, especially animal foods such as meat (salted), fish (dried, salted, fresh), bread and butter were called side dishes. Milk and dishes made from it was rarely used. During the milking season was produced and salted butter to keep for the autumn and winter. Peas, beans, lentils, barley and flour soups played an important role in the table. Porridges were popular.

Food for festive occasions barley included sausages (bloodless white sausages and black pudding in North Estonia South Estonia), pig head, blood sausage and pork. Small cakes with various fillings were prepared.

Typical food in Estonian Schools

From the end of the 19th century, new foods, which has previously made only in the cities and delicacies, began to multiply. The amount of store-bought foods and herbs. Different types of baked white bread and cakes, barley porridge was often replaced by Farina or rice pudding. Herring and potatoes appeared on the table.
The grain foods were most important for Estonians, and barley and rye were the most used. Today, Estonians still love rye bread, which is an everyday foods since the 12th century. Dishes from oats and hemp seeds were prepared to a lesser extent, wheat products and not the Estonian food table to arrive at the end of the 19th century.

The venue for holding song festivals in Kadriorg is dear to every Estonian’s heart. The current choir stand has a highly original construction. It accommodates up to 300 000 singers. The area ascending to the Lasnamäe slope is designated for 250 000 people.

Song festivals mean much more to Estonians than any other musical event.

They boost self-confidence and have helped to fight for the country, language and indepencendence. The first song festival took place in 1869 in Tartu. The suvsequent festivals were increasingly grander. The festivities begin with a colourful procession of the performers dressed in national costumes, to the Song Festival grounds. The festival lasts for two days. The final song is traditionall “Mu isamaa” (My Native Land”, when the audience stands up and joins in.
