Viljandi castle used to be one of the biggest and most powerful castles in Baltic region in 13th century, but it was destroyed completely by the enemy in 1558. Nowadays, only the walls are left.
You can see, how the fortress used to look from the maquette of theĀ in the Museum of Viljandi.
The middle of the ruins is a stage, where in the summer there is an opportunity to watch outdoor theatre and concerts. There is picturesque view from the ruins to Viljandi lake, which is enjoyed both the local residents of the town for visitors.
There is a beautiful park and over 50 m long suspension bridge near the castle ruins.
